Cornel Dahlia
Cornel Dahlias are a great ball flower in a deep blood red. They grow profuse blooms on strong stalks for cutting. In our climate, and the genetics of our tuber, Cornel grows a healthy 4 feet with blooms that reach upwards of 5 feet. The plant is always bushy and does a bit of crowding to neighboring dahlias, so be mindful of that when planning where to put this plant. As a taller variety, staking it important. It produces really nice tubers in the fall and is an overall delight to have in the garden.
We brought Cornel into our garden from our friends dahlia patch at In The Trough Farm. We had been comparing favorites and she stated this flower did really well in cuttings. We’ve grown Cornel red for several years now. Several Cornel varieties are available now, like Cornel Bronze, but this one must have been the original as it goes by the simple name Cornel.
