Cornel Dahlia

  • Tight ball flower in nice red tone that fills the frame. The image is in full sun so the flower looks bright red like blood.
  • Focused to the center of the flower so the petals can be seen unfolding. Also in full sun so the flower looks blood red.
  • There are two blooms and a bud in this image with lots of green foliage.
  • The flower is centered in this image in the middle. It was taken on a cloudy day so the color is a darker red.
  • The center of the bloom is in the upper right corner and the flower fills the frame showing Cornel Red Dahlias characteristic curled outer leaves towards the center and almost shark teeth layering of central petals.
  • Taken away from the plant, this image focuses on the number of blooms, strong stems, and lush green foliage.
  • Great tubers on this 2022 Cornel Red, healthy eyes and crowns.

Cornel Dahlias are a great ball flower in a deep blood red. They grow profuse blooms on strong stalks for cutting. In our climate, and the genetics of our tuber, Cornel grows a healthy 4 feet with blooms that reach upwards of 5 feet. The plant is always bushy and does a bit of crowding to neighboring dahlias, so be mindful of that when planning where to put this plant. As a taller variety, staking it important. It produces really nice tubers in the fall and is an overall delight to have in the garden.

We brought Cornel into our garden from our friends dahlia patch at In The Trough Farm. We had been comparing favorites and she stated this flower did really well in cuttings. We’ve grown Cornel red for several years now. Several Cornel varieties are available now, like Cornel Bronze, but this one must have been the original as it goes by the simple name Cornel.
