Groovy Dahlias
Groovy Dahlias add not just color in petals, but also in their foliage. They are known for black foliage, which is really a deep dark green color. The flowers are petite but colorful and the plants are quite prolific throwing numerous blooms. They have become a central delight in the garden and are great additions to vases. This flower photographs similar to another dahlia we like to grow called Doodlebug. Doodlebug Dahlias have typical green leaves while Groovy has the dark green leaves known as black foliage. There are also subtle differences in the colors of the flowers. Doodlebug has a brighter more playful and youthful pink tone. Groovy has a deeper darker palette. In the fall, this plant creates insane numbers of tubers. It may be the most prolific variety we grown. Tubers are 2-3 inch ovals, but be prepared for some skinny necks. This is how Groovy makes so many tubers, by sending narrow necks out to grow another ring of tubers away from the stalks.
We chose Groovy for the garden to try a black foliage dahlia and we loved the color of the blooms too. It seems we always have 2-3 plants each year. This variety is often pulled into fall bouquets and sets a spicy fall mood.
