Hulin’s Carnival Dahlias

  • This flower sits against the side of a house and shows a striped pattern of white with burgundy splashes.
  • Held in hand, the bloom has several solid petals and a few striped petals.

This is a fun variety that does not reliably pigment. In the dahlia world, that means the plant isn’t real stable. This equates to blooms having a lot of individual character. The color is deeper and more purple in tone than Picasso. Many blooms have a bunch of purple stripes or even solid petals. It is a formal decorative bloom and produced several blooms for us. It had a healthy tuber production on a nice plant.

We grew both Picasso and Hulin’s Carnival, but found we liked the waterlily form of Picasso, as well as the color. So when we lost Hulin’s Carnival due to inexperienced labeling and at one point getting totally overwhelmed with the dividing process the first year, followed with a repeat questioning of sanity the following spring trying to figure out what one does with all those tubers. We ended up giving away all the tubers of this variety. Since we have Picasso, which is similar, we decided to try other new varieties rather than replacing this variety.
