Innocence Dahlia
Innocence Dahlias boast waterlily blooms of the softest pink. There is a touch of white at the center as the petals form. Following the blooms in whirls, the pink tones are added to the flower. The plant is a solid producer of blooms that work well in arrangements. Depending on nutrient availability in the soil, this plant has grown as short at 3 feet tall in some years, but up to 4.5 feet in others. It produces a decent amount of foliage to offset the blooms and does not have a crowding habit like some dahlias. It could easily be tucked closer to other non-crowding dahlias and we have planted as close at 16 inches apart.
One of the differences between Charlotte Mae and Innocence is in how the petals form. If you look at the images here, you will notice the inner petals are curled towards the center. That is why Innocence is considered a waterlily dahlia bloom. Charlotte Mae pictured below is an informal decorative bloom and the petals do not curl/roll towards the center.
In 1989, Don Henle released a song titled The End of the Innocence. One of the lyrics, “When happily ever after fails and we’ve been poisoned by these fairy tales, lawyers dwell on small details since daddy had to fly..” described the events of Nichole’s family in that same year. The flower Innocence reminds of the soft, carefree childhood of a small child before growing up. Always one to use songs to express feelings, the word Innocence holds deep meaning for us which is why through the changes of dahlias grown since 2017, Innocence will always remain.
