Bluetiful Dahlias
Bluetiful Dahlias are touted as being the closest dahlia to a true blue color. We think it still seems pretty purple, but it is an astoundingly pretty big bloomer. The blooms are large and an individual plant will have up to a dozen or more blooms at a time. It is a taller plant when given full sun, and it can get quite bushy. We have left it without a stake some seasons, but if the wind comes up, it can tear branches from the plant, so we recommend staking. It tolerates minor crowding so long as it has full sun, but will be less robust in the shade and will not like crowding in those circumstances. It has been a work horse in tuber production outside of the weird 2022 growing season. The blooms last nicely in the vase and pair well with a number of color pallets.
Bluetiful is one of the first dahlias we selected to grow, largely based on color preference. The petal form is nice and we find we often take these blooms when building bouquets to give to family and friends. Bluetiful will never be on our cut list of dahlias as we modify plantings each year and struggle for space in the elk proof part of our acreage.
